The number of Kazakhstan elderly people living in retirement homes has reduced by 50% in three years, Tengrinews.kz. According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Kazakhstan, more than 6000 pensioners were living in retirement homes as of January 1, 2012. The number of elderly people living in retirement homes made 0.34% of the total number of pensioners that made 1.7 million people as of 2011, according to the Statistics Agency. More than 7000 people lived in retirement homes in 2011. In 2009 the number of elderly people living in such facilities made up 12 075 people, according to Kazakhstan Statistics Agency. Officials of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection say that there are 50 state-run Medical and Social Retirement Homes for old and handicapped people in Kazakhstan at present. The average cost of services at these homes made 2,142 tenge ($14.5) per one person a day last year.
