Later in the day, two more tremors were recorded in the same region, with magnitudes of 5.0 and 5.3. Both were also felt in parts of Istanbul.
The seismic activity brings back memories of the catastrophic earthquakes in February 2023 that devastated southeastern Turkey. Those quakes, with magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.5, resulted in more than 50,000 deaths in Turkey and over 8,000 in Syria, leading to a nationwide state of emergency and a week of national mourning.
