Tengrinews.kz – Minister of Culture and Information Aida Balaeva responded to a question regarding the possible blocking of social media platforms in Kazakhstan amid the recent appearance of provocative posts and advertisements.
During a government briefing, journalists asked Balaeva why the Ministry of Culture and Information is not reacting to advertisements on social networks that call on citizens of the CIS and Kazakhstan to sign contracts for participation in military actions in Ukraine. According to the minister, the ministry is actively working to identify such content.
"I can’t say we’re not reacting, because, as you know, the volume of disinformation and illegal content is very large. (...) We are conducting significant work to identify such materials. We send them for review individually, and in most cases, the administrators of social networks promptly remove them. But another issue is that these posts are also systematically and constantly spread by our opponents and certain irresponsible citizens. Therefore, we will continue this work," Balaeva explained.
The minister also addressed the question of whether social networks would be blocked in Kazakhstan due to such posts.
"In this regard, there is a lot of talk about blocking various social media platforms. What I want to emphasize is that this does not depend solely on the administrators of these platforms or the actions of government agencies. First and foremost, it concerns the users themselves, who must understand their responsibility — they are directly accountable for maintaining societal stability and preventing the spread of false information. Those who break the law and are identified will, of course, be held legally accountable," added Aida Balaeva.
