Tengrinews.kz – The Ministry of Healthcare announced the introduction of new approaches to state control over the organization of school meals.
It was reported that this decision was made following the mass food poisoning incidents among schoolchildren in the Mangystau region.
"To systematically address issues related to violations of sanitary and epidemiological requirements, the Ministry of Healthcare of Kazakhstan has developed new approaches to state control over educational facilities. These approaches are aimed at granting special status to facilities with child occupancy, eliminating prior notifications for inspections to ensure objective assessments, and introducing monitoring visits to bring facilities into compliance with sanitary and epidemiological standards," the Ministry said in its statement.
It is noted that current regulations do not allow authorized bodies to fully cover all child-occupied facilities with state supervision.
As part of the President's directive regarding cases of mass food poisoning in school canteens, the Ministry of Healthcare, in coordination with the General Prosecutor’s Office, is conducting unscheduled inspections of food units at educational institutions in the Mangystau region to check compliance with sanitary and epidemiological standards.
A total of 72 facilities have been selected for inspection in the region; to date, 14 school food units have been inspected.
To investigate the poisoning cases and ensure the safety of school meals, an Interdepartmental Working Group has been established, including representatives from relevant agencies such as the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Healthcare, and the General Prosecutor’s Office.
It should be recalled that in early April, twelve schoolchildren from the Manashin General Education School in the Beineu district of the Mangystau region suffered from food poisoning. Following this incident, the Ministry of Healthcare of Kazakhstan launched an investigation. A special task force was created under the regional akimat (administration), and the school’s canteen was sealed by the Manashyn district police department.
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, during a meeting on the socio-economic development of the Mangystau region on Friday, April 18, responded to the mass poisoning incidents in educational institutions and instructed the government, together with relevant state agencies, to take special control over ensuring the safety of students.
