Tengrinews.kz – Alarming videos circulating online show a truck loaded with saiga antelope carcasses and others being shot while trapped inside a fenced area, drawing widespread public concern across Kazakhstan.
The footage, which has gone viral on social media, reveals disturbing scenes: in one clip, a truck transports dozens of dead saigas; in another, the animals are seen desperately attempting to flee from shooters within a netted enclosure.
Similar videos emerged in late March, showing large numbers of saiga carcasses lying across steppe regions. At the time, the Ministry of Ecology acknowledged the incidents, stating that the majority of dead animals had been found in their natural habitats - specifically in the Ulytau region, as well as Karaganda, Kyzylorda, Atyrau, and West Kazakhstan regions.
Officials attributed the deaths to natural causes, citing seasonal mortality patterns among the saiga population. According to the Ministry, over 5,200 saiga carcasses have been disposed of since the start of the year, following established protocols.
Ainur Gracheva, head of the mammalogy lab at the Institute of Zoology, previously explained that natural mortality typically affects up to 20% of the total saiga population annually, with adult males being particularly vulnerable - sometimes accounting for up to half of the fatalities.
Despite these explanations, the graphic nature of the new footage has reignited public concern and skepticism, prompting calls for greater transparency and accountability. Environmental activists and lawmakers have demanded urgent measures to address saiga population management and ensure ethical treatment of the animals.

Earlier this year, a member of Parliament urged authorities to make a definitive decision on regulating the saiga population, emphasizing the need for action amid growing ecological and societal tensions.
