5 thousand people gathered in Almaty for Nauryz celebration on March 22, Tengrinews.kz reports. By 11:00 a.m. the whole Astana square was crowded by people and the celebrations got way outside the square, where the residents were entertaining themselves by taking short rides on houses and camels. The celebrations included a fair of jewelry, paintings and souvenirs. Paintings made by students of Almaty schools were exhibited at the square. The celebrations also included the shows and contests, competitions of the national singers and national dances. The celebrators were treated with the traditional Nauryz-Kozhe dish. The cooks presented different recipes of this dish: some of them were made of sour milk and groats and some included meat. Young people swang traditional Kazakh swings called Altybakan. The construction was strong enough to hold 10-12 people at a time. Children competed in shooting toy bows. The most accurate of them received prizes. Adults also took part in sports games. Many of them wanted to remember the childhood by playing Assyk game, an ancient bones-throwing game. Young guys competed in lifting 24-kg kettlebells; some of them managed to lift them over 40 times. The celebrations on Astana square continued until late evening. A concert of Kazakhstan stars was held at the square between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Holiday fireworks started at 10:00 p.m.
