Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev has come back to be the Senate Speaker after a 3-year break, Tengrinews reports. “I suggested electing Mr. Tokayev (…) as I relieved Mr. Kairat Mami of his duties so that he could get back to his professional path [Supreme Court]”, President Nazarbayev said when speaking at a Senate plenary session. Mr. Tokayev’s candidacy was unanimously supported. Earlier Mr. Tokayev worked in the USSR Foreign Ministry, Soviet Embassy in China. He has also served as Minister for Foreign Affairs (1994-1999), Secretary of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2002-2007), and as Prime Minister of Kazakhstan (1999-2002). In 2007 he was elected Speaker of the Kazakhstan’s Senate. On 11 March 2011, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan as the new Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG). Kairat Mami, the outgoing Senate Speaker, has been appointed to chair the country’s Supreme Court.
