Chairman of Tabigat ecological union Mels Yeleussizov tagged Almaty windstorm consequences an ecological catastrophe, Tengrinews.kz reports. “I don't remember such a storm in Almaty,” said Kazakhstan chief ecologist. “The fallen firs were both old, 100 years, and young. I would call these consequences an ecological catastrophe, because those firs helped clean up Almaty air from smoke and smog. Increase of smog causes deglaciation and temperature increase,” Yeleussizov said. As per the ecologist, average air temperature in the world has increased by 0.5 degrees. Should the increase reach 3 degrees, irreversible processes may start in the world. “Kazakhstan people have to plant trees and make up for the losses in Medeo area,” he said. “70 percent of forests were cut in the last 200 years.” On May 17 Almaty was hit by 2 cm hail. The storm claimed a life of 24-year-old man and his girlfriend was hospitalized. Another woman was injured. The wind ripped off the roofs roofs from houses and schools.
