Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev has met with President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko today in Kiev, Ukraine, Tengrinews reports citing the press service of Akorda.

The two leaders discussed the key issues in bilateral trade and economic cooperation as well as pressing matters on the international agenda. In addition, the sides dwelt on the situation in Ukraine and the ways to settle the crisis with the participation of all the countries concerned.

Nursultan Nazarbayev emphasized the importance of the meeting that enabled the two presidents to exchange views on a number of important issues related to their countries' bilateral cooperation.

“I would like to congratulate you on the fact that despite all the difficulties you managed to hold the elections to Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) and form a government. This is your first big victory as President. Development of Minsk Protocol is also your merit,” Kazakh President said.

Nursultan Nazarbayev stressed the necessity to revive and further enhance the economic ties between the two countries. “Ukrainian agricultural and municipal equipment is widely used in Kazakhstan. Food is imported (from Ukraine). We also supply our products to Ukraine. The volume of trade that once stood at $4 billion has fallen by a third, but we have the opportunity to return it to the previous high levels. In this context, the intergovernmental commission should work hard and find common ground. I know that such opportunities exist,” Nursultan Nazarbayev said.

The Kazakh leader noted that he supported all the measures aimed at peaceful settlement of the situation in Ukraine. “The current situation does not bring benefits to anyone. Given our friendly relations with all the countries, we could work on this issue together. I hope that we could achieve certain decisions and coordinate actions to end the bloodshed,” the President of Kazakhstan said.

In his turn, Poroshenko stressed the necessity to actively use the existing potential in cooperation between the two countries in trade, economy, culture, humanitarian realm and other key areas.

“It is necessary to start the intergovernmental commission working, this should help eliminate barriers between the two countries. I would also like to thank you for the strong and consistent support of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine. We had the opportunity to talk briefly in Minsk, and the statements and agreements came through very clearly. Ukraine appreciates it very much,” the President said.

Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev repeatedly voiced his stance on the situation in Ukraine and his support to a peaceful resolution of the conflict. On December 21, during the meeting with Kazakhstan's media representatives Nazarbayev said that he could act as an independent intermediary between the parties in the Ukrainian crisis. "The task of all, I believe, is to stop this war, to strengthen the independence of Ukraine and to recognize the territorial integrity of Ukraine - to come to the negotiating table, as the Russian leaders now put it. (...) if there's anything I can help with, I believe that Kazakhstan equally treats Russia and Ukraine, we have no conflicts of interest, I'm here, as a so-called 'honest manager' that supports neither side and is neutral, this may contribute somehow, " he said.
