Almaty kayakers are training on the Big Almaty River for the third season. But until one of the kayakers posted about it in his blog nobody even knew that the sportsmen' training can be seen early morning twice a week. Kayaker Aleksandr Gabchenko, 32, told Tengrinews.kz that he came to this sport after rafting. There are not many fans of this sport in Almaty, just a few people. Most of them have rafting background. Each of them has his own love story for kayaking. “For us this is a sort of entertainment, just for the soul, for training. This is not an Olympic sport, that's why there are not many sportsmen,” Gabchenko said. However, more and more people come to like this sport, but not everyone knows how to start. Aleksandr says that their team is ready to help newcomers. “We train each other. In the beginning we watched videos on YouTube, educated ourselves,” he said. The sportsmen purchased their equipment via the Internet. Right now there is enough water in Big Almaty river for kayaking. But it is not an easy task. “The cascades give a river a slight curve. The curve causes oblique waves moving from one wall to another. When going for a jump they have to be considered, which we sometimes cannot do. That is why we look like submarines sometimes,” Aleksandr posted in his blog. Recently the expreme sportsmen went to a festival in Altai.
