Tengrinews.kz – Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin was asked about how the government plans to curb the rise in food prices in connection with the rise in the dollar.
At a government briefing, Zhumangarin said that today Kazakhstan provides itself with 100 percent of 10 socially important goods. Among them are flour, salt, rice, pasta, butter, potatoes, lamb, beef, carrots.
"For 14 food products, the supply is 80 percent or more, there is import dependence for 5 food products: we provide ourselves with 73 percent of poultry, 60 percent of sausage, 60 percent of fish, 46 percent of cheese and cottage cheese, 44 percent of sugar. There are certain risks here," Serik Zhumangarin said.
He noted that there are certain risks with some types of vegetables and fruits that are not produced in Kazakhstan. These include oranges, bananas, lemons, and so on, the cost of which may increase slightly.
The official also emphasized that, according to the latest monitoring of prices in stores, over the past week "nothing has gone up in price."
"We haven't seen a big rise in prices during the off-season. Last year, for example, prices were surprisingly stable around New Year. If any trends do come up, we'll address them. We'll hold farmers' markets in major cities and ensure supplies. While some price changes might happen, they will be kept to a minimum," added Zhumangarin.
In his opinion, the period of price volatility in Kazakhstan has come to an end.
"As for oranges, lemons and other citrus fruits that we do not grow, the issue of reducing import customs duties on these types of products is currently being considered at the Eurasian Economic Commission," he said.
According to Zhumangarin, since we have enterprises that work with closed ground and build greenhouses, we are considering how this will affect their activities tomorrow and whether there will be pressure in the market. Therefore, a decision will be made in the near future.
Earlier, Minister of National Economy Nurlan Baibazarov addressed the question of whether food and goods prices in Kazakhstan will increase due to fluctuations in the dollar exchange rate.
