Tengrinews.kz - Preparation has begun for a major reconstruction of a popular tourist spot in Almaty.

The famous radon spring Alma-Arasan, located in the picturesque Big Almaty Gorge, is set to undergo significant changes. According to the press service of the Almaty Akimat, the infrastructure reconstruction project for the spring will soon be presented for discussion and approval at the city maslikhat.

Why is reconstruction necessary?

Despite construction work carried out in 2019, the current state of the facilities does not meet modern safety and comfort requirements. Numerous complaints from local residents and tourists about outdated infrastructure have led to the development of a new large-scale project.

"The budget for these purposes will be reviewed at the upcoming session. The repairs, which will affect the entire infrastructure of the spring, are driven by numerous appeals from city residents and tourists. Despite the construction work done in 2019, the condition of the facilities today does not meet modern safety and comfort standards," the statement said.

What changes are expected at Alma-Arasan?

A complete overhaul of the entire infrastructure is planned. The main works include:

  • Construction of new bridges with anti-slip surfaces to ensure safety in any weather;
  • Upgrading the road network and creating modern pedestrian zones for the convenience of visitors;
  • Installation of staircases with railings at difficult sections, making even hard-to-reach areas safer;
  • New signs and information boards to help with navigation and provide details about the history and features of the spring.

"It is expected that after the reconstruction, Alma-Arasan will become a new unique tourist attraction in the region," emphasized the press service.

According to the department's data, in 2025, 697.4 million tenge will be allocated for the development of Almaty’s mountain and urban infrastructure. The akimat (city administration) also plans to create 10 mountain routes with navigation and establish camping zones with solar panels in remote areas.

"The project will include the installation of tactile models of tourist sites and the development of information centers, totems, and terminals," the department highlighted.
