Kazakhstan's Free Birds movie by Margulan Kapashev has been entered into the Short Film Corner programme of Cannes Film Festival, Tengrinews reports.

Continuation

The move was filmed in 2013. Some of the scenes were made in Tengri Studio. Dimash Akhimov, Adil Yessenbulatov, Aruzhan Dzhazilbekova and Telopbergen Baisakalov played the main parts in the movie. Margulan Kapashev wrote the script and produced the movie together with Nurlan Mukhatayev.

The director planned to get the movie ready before the Berlin film festival in February but couldn't finish it in time.

The Free Birds movie is a philosophical parable. “Many people dream of something and wait for a miracle to happen. Everyone thinks that miracles are always something good, but there is a flipside to this coin: miracles can be evil and dangerous. The movie's main character was waiting for a miracle to happen for a long time, and when it finally did happen, it changed his entire life,” the director said.

Kapashev regretted that he had to cut his 23-minute movie down to 15 minutes to meet the requirements of the Cannes festival. "I had to remove 8 minutes that is nearly a half of the movie, and I feared that it would harm the story, but in the end in turned out even better (than the longer version), more dynamic," he shared.

Margulan Kapashev is an economist who was a businessman before joining the film industry.

The 67th International Cannes Film festival is going to be held on May 14-25. 3450 short films from 128 countries have been submitted to the Short Film Corner programme jury this year.
