Almaty office workers switch to bicycles

An unusual flashmob was held in Almaty: dozens of office workers went cycling in business suits in the city center, Tengrinews.kz reports. According to the organizers, the event was held to draw attention of drivers and the society to green transport and remind them that bikes are a good was to get to work. “This is a comfortable and cheap way, and it is good for the health,” they say. Well known journalist and musician Oleg Belov (in the photo) said he sometimes used his bike to get to work, there were not many bicycle paths in the city. Participants of the flash mob cycled through a short route: they started from the crossing of Abai and Baitursynov streets and got to Dostyk street. The initiator of the event Dina Turganbayeva decided to gather her friends using social networks. She hopes that after yje flashmob more office workers will seriously think about using bicycles as a transport and there will be less cars in the city. The opening of the cycling season in Almaty was held on April 14 when hundreds of cyclists took a ride with Almaty Akim (Mayor) Akhmetzhan Yessimov and famous Kazakhstan cyclist and London Olimpic champion Aleksander Vinokourov. The route of this year’s first bike ride went along Al-Farabi street from Tattimbet street to the First President’s park, where all the participants received traditional gifts and watched a concert.
