Kazakhstan scientists have made a long-term weather forecast for Almaty and Almaty oblast. They concluded that Almaty climate is becoming subtropical with all of this climate's brightest manifestations: soggy spring and heavy rains and storms and short winter with puddles and heavy wet snow. This forecast is partially described in the article of general geology assistant professor of Satpayev Kazakh National Technical University Mikhail Kazantsev, Express-K writes. The expert warns that the storms that hit Almaty on May 17 May 17 and June 27 “are only the beginning of the coming climatic cataclysms.” The author states that Small and Large Almaty Gorge will become an arena for future devastating storms. Strong cyclones with heavy rains and winds will become regular for Almaty and the most destructive of them will hit Southern mountain areas. Heavy rains will cause floods in Northern areas of the city that consitue a dipression attracting all the temporary and constant water flows, Kazantsev said. Landslides from the mountaines into the direction Kaskelen, Talgar, Essik and Turgen satellite towns are considered to be unavoidable because of the sharp changes of the climat in Almaty region. “Analysis of generic reasons of landslides in Almaty and oblast showed that formation of destructive landslides requires very heavy rain in the mountains to last for at least four hours, just as it happened in Almaty in 1921,” assistant professor writes. Head of the Climat Research Department of KazHydroMet weather service Svetlana Dolgikh agreed with the scientist’s forecast. Answering the question on whether the climate in the region is becoming subtropical, she said: “Most probably, yes.”
