Tengrinews.kz - Popular airlines are tightening regulations on the transportation of lithium batteries, according to Air Astana’s press service.
Starting March 13, 2025, Air Astana and FlyArystan will implement stricter control measures for transporting lithium batteries and devices containing them.
What will change for passengers?
The transportation of spare lithium batteries, including power banks and electronic smoking devices, will now only be allowed in carry-on luggage. If a passenger needs to check their carry-on bag, they must first remove all spare batteries.
Special attention to battery capacity:
Up to 100 watt-hours – allowed without restrictions, but only in carry-on luggage.
100 to 160 watt-hours – permitted only with prior airline approval (maximum of two batteries per passenger).
Over 160 watt-hours – prohibited for transportation.
"Battery capacity will be checked, and transportation without proper labeling or certification will not be allowed. For flight safety, lithium batteries, power banks, and electronic smoking devices must be carried in hand luggage and stored in overhead compartments in the cabin. Using batteries to charge other devices or charging the batteries themselves on board is strictly prohibited," the airline stated.
It is reported that passengers will no longer be able to charge their gadgets using portable power banks during the flight or connect chargers to onboard sockets.
Passengers are advised to familiarize themselves with the transportation rules in advance to avoid inconveniences during their journey.
Why this matters
Lithium batteries pose a potential hazard—if damaged or overheated, they can catch fire.
Similar incidents have already occurred in aviation. For example, earlier this year, a Air Busan plane caught fire at Busan Airport in South Korea while preparing for departure to Hong Kong. According to emergency services, the fire started in the aircraft's tail section just minutes before takeoff and quickly spread to the fuselage. The plane was completely destroyed by the fire.
