Number of HIV infected people grew 20 percent in Astana

HIV rate in Astana in January-September 2011 increased by 20 percent compared to the same period of 2010, KazTAG reports citing deputy head of Astana Healthcare Department Saule Kurmanova. “70 cases of HIV were registered in Astana as of October 1. The HIV Index is 9.7 per every 100 thousand in Astana. The increase is 1.2 times or 20 percent, compared to the 9 months of 2010,” she said at the round-table meeting on HIV/AIDS in Astana administration. According to her, there are 458 HIV-infected people living in Astana. Starting from the beginning of this year, 125 thousand people have been tested for HIV in Kazakhstan. As per the doctors' information, the virus spreads mainly among employable population of reproductive age. 75.5 percent of infected people are 29-39 years old and most frequently the virus is transmitted through sexual contacts.
