Nursultan Nazarbayev met with the expert commission of the International Exhibitions Bureau (BIE), Tengrinews.kz reports citing Kazakhstan President's website. "Today we are glad to show the capabilities of our country as a candidate for holding the exhibition in 2017. We are full of energy to prepare and host EXPO-2017 in case of the commission's positive decision. We will consider it a national project. During the visit to our country you had an opportunity to meet with representatives of different structures and find out Astana's potential," the President said during the meeting with the experts. In his turn, chairman of the expert commission Steen Christensen noted that the invitation to visit Kazakhstan emphasizes the seriousness of the country's intention to host EXPO-2017. "Our commission has held several meetings with ministers, representatives of the parliament, senate and Kazakhstan Chamber of Commerce. We were assured of both political and financial support to this project," he noted. Speaking to journalists, Christensen said that the chances of Kazakhstan and Belgium, its main competitor, are equal. "The objective of the expert commission is not to compare two projects, but to define whether, Kazakhstan's application complies with the technical requirements set by the International Exhibitions Bureau," he said. International Exhibitions Bureau was established in 1928 to control performance of Paris Convention on International Exhibitions and solve the issues that arise during their organization. This international organization includes 160 countries. The head office is located in Paris. Kazakhstan's application for hosting EXPO-2017 in Astana was announced on July 1, 2010 during BIE General Assembly. First official presentation of Kazakhstan was made on June 14, 2011 during 149th session of the General Assembly of BIE in Paris. The winner of the contest will be defined in December 2012.
