Tengrinews.kz - Residents of 17 villages in the Katon-Karagay district in East Kazakhstan are working on a new schedule.
As explained by the akimat (local government administration) from January 5, 2025, a five-day work week from 8 AM to 5:30 PM and a lunch break from 12 PM to 1:30 PM was introduced in the Katon-Karagay district.
Head of the Internal Policy Department of the Katon-Karagay District Akimat Gulnar Zhaksylykova reported that at the end of last year, a working group visited the district to discuss the issue of the time zone. During meetings with the population, it was decided to launch a pilot project and start the working day at 8 AM.
"In Katon-Karagay, it gets light early, we are in the far east, it is already light at five. Again, in the village, people get up early. Therefore, many immediately agreed. By order of the district akim (governor - ed.) we have been working from eight in the morning since January 5," says Gulnar Zhaksylykova.
As reported by the akimat, all 40 institutions in the district have switched to the new working hours, although many did not even have to adjust, because schools, kindergartens and hospitals were already working from 8 AM.
"It's very convenient. Before, children were taken to kindergarten at 8 AM, and then work started only at 9 AM, and now - you take your child to kindergarten on the way to work, but you are free earlier, come home and have time to do things. We are happy with this, we do not want to return to the previous schedule," says Gulnar Zhaksylykova.
Local entrepreneurs also supported the decision to change the work schedule.
"We are a tourist area, many people stop by the store for groceries early, and we are already open - it is convenient for everyone," says entrepreneur Madina Zheksembayeva.
According to official data, the pilot project was introduced in such villages of the Katon-Karagay district as Kabyrga, Belkaragai, Ornek, Topkaiyn, Barlyk, Korobikha and Aksu, Orel, Arshaty, Berel, Zhambyl, Kaiyndy, Kyzyl Zhuldyz, Akkainar, Enbek, Shyngystay, Zhanaulgi.
Recall: On the night of February 29 to March 1, Kazakhstan switched to a single time zone. Three months later, on June 7, a petition to cancel the time change collected the required 50 thousand signatures.
In August, the Ministry of Trade and Integration announced the final decision regarding the time zone petition. At that time, Minister Arman Shakkaliyev stated that based on substantiated scientific international studies on the positive effects of standard time zones and the absence of evidence of negative health impacts, a decision was made to deny the petition.
Earlier, the eGov mobile app offered Kazakhstanis a survey with a series of questions about the time zone change: what time zone is relevant for them, what to do with the already established time, what they lack time for during the day, and so on.
However, later the survey on time zone changes disappeared from the app.
