Kazakhstan men's chess team has defeated the Swedish team in the second round of the 41st World Chess Olympiad held in the city of Tromso, Norway on August 1-14,2014, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
The Kazakh team consisting of Grandmaster Pavel Kotsur, GM Petr Kostenko, GM Rustam Khusnutdinov and International Master Aslan Aitbayev competed with the Swedish team consisting of GM Nils Grandelius, GM Evgenij Agrest, GM Tiger Hillarp Persson and GM Hans Tikkanen.
Three Kazakhstani chess players won in the second round, and Khusnutdinov tied his game with Persson making the score 3.5:0.5.
The Kazakh chess team has an average rating of 2505 and ranks 49th in the team ranking, while the team of Sweden is a little bit stronger with an average rating of 2569 and the 34th place in the ranking. You can see the standings here.
Meanwhile, Kazakhstan's Women chess team made up of Guliskhan Nakhbayeva, Dinara Saduakasova, Zhansaya Abdumalik and Gulmira Dauletova left no chance to chess team from Togo with a score of 4:0.
These wins were second for Kazakhstan's teams in the tournament. Earlier, the men's team defeated Kuwait 4:0, and the women's team overcame Portugal 2.5:1.5.
In the third round of the Olympiad, Kazakhstan's men's team will play against Latvia, and the women's team will compete with the chess team from India.
The World Chess Olympiad is a biennial chess tournament, the most important one after the World Championship. The tournament lasts for two weeks and involves more than 2000 players from 170 countries. The event is organised by the World Chess Federation that selects the host nation.
