Tengrinews.kz - Devices that have become a familiar part of our lives can pose a hidden threat. As British audiologists explain, the popularity of regular headphones has led not only to an increase in hearing problems, but also to brain disorders, as well as an increase in the number of neurological disorders among Generation Z, according to DailyMail.
The modern world is full of sounds - from car horns to the noise of the subway. For many, noise-canceling headphones are a salvation, allowing you to immerse yourself in your favorite music or podcasts without unnecessary stimuli. However, experts warn: such sound insulation can affect brain function.
As said British Academy of Audiology Vice President Claire Benton, constantly blocking out background noise deprives the brain of its natural training. As a result, over time, it can "forget" how to properly filter sounds, which leads to auditory processing disorder (APD). This condition makes it difficult to perceive speech and distinguish sounds, especially in noisy environments.
Who should ditch noise-canceling headphones
Teenagers, whose brains are still developing, are especially vulnerable. If a person is used to living in an "acoustic vacuum" created by headphones at a young age, their ability to adapt to real conditions may slow down. Therefore, experts advise finding a balance - enjoying the silence, but not forgetting to give the brain the opportunity to interact with the outside world.
Today, many teenagers and students wear noise-canceling headphones to disconnect from the city noise. However, doctors have noticed an alarming trend: more and more young people complain of hearing problems, but examinations show that their ears are fine. The problem lies in the brain, which has a harder time processing sounds.
What happens if you wear headphones for a long time
Renee Almeida, an adult audiology clinical lead at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, explains: the brain needs to hear a range of sounds to learn how to distinguish important noises from background noise. If you are constantly in artificial sound insulation created by headphones, this skill can be weakened. As a result, people find it harder to understand speech, hold conversations and concentrate on studying or work.
Previously, such problems were associated with injury or illness, but now experts increasingly point to noise-cancelling headphones. Complete sound insulation may seem comfortable, but it is important not to forget to give the brain a chance to hear the real world.
