Tengrinews.kz - The behavior of a squirrel calmly jumping up the vertical wall of a high-rise building in Almaty is being discussed online. To find out how typical its behavior is, Tengrinews.kz decided to consult with Kazakhstani experts.
A video posted on the TikTok account silewsin has gone viral, attracting audience attention. The footage shows the squirrel skillfully jumping between the balconies of the high-rise and literally running up the walls. According to the caption, the incident took place in Almaty.
The video has sparked numerous comments, with social media users joking and speculating that it could become a popular meme. At the time of publication, the original video had garnered about 100,000 views.
"The city needs a new hero, Spider-squirrel, Adapted to different surfaces," people wrote in the comments.
The press service of the Institute of Zoology commented on the popular video.
"As noted by the theriologist, this behavior is quite normal for squirrels, especially in urban areas where they have adapted to living alongside humans," the press service reported.
Ecologist Alyona Koshkina also pointed out that such behavior is typical for city-dwelling squirrels.
"In Almaty, there is an acclimatized subspecies of the common squirrel – the Teleut squirrel. Here, the squirrel is not an indigenous species. Why does the squirrel climb buildings? Perhaps it's searching for food. Sometimes squirrels raid bird feeders. To prevent this, special hanging structures with rodent protection can be used," she noted.
