Gulsana Sisengaliyeva, a fourth year student at the Institute of Applied Chemistry of the Gumilyov Eurasian University in Astana discovered a new compound that she produced from wormwood, Tengrinews reports citing 24.kz TV channel.

The junior researcher used the plant, which is in abundance in Western Kazakhstan region, to produce the new compound now named “shernyaevin”.

"Chernyaev’s Wormwood is the topic of my thesis. I started the studies back in September, and six months later l achieved some results. We are still in the beginning. So far we only known that this is a new compound, however, its properties and where it can be applied remains to be determined," the student said.

During the study Gulsana identified three different substances, one of which turned out to be the new “shernyaevin”, according to the University’s website.

The novelty of the compound has been confirmed by the Cambridge Structural Database in collaboration with Professor Christophe Van Hecke (University of Ghent, Belgium).

"Just a week ago we received a confirmation from the Cambridge Database, that the compound we found is indeed something new," said the head of the research project Yerlan Suleiman, Ph.D.

Even though Gulsana believes that further research needs to be done, she has already found that the new compound has an antiradical (antioxidant) property.
