Chess Federation of Kazakhstan has been temporarily suspended starting February 1 due to lack of financing, Tengrinews reports citing the official website of the Federation.

According to the Chess Federation, the National Wealth Fund of Kazakhstan Samruk-Kazyna refused to continue sponsoring the organization due to the complicated economic situation in Kazakhstan and worldwide. The Fund announced its decision on January 21, 2015.

"In connection with the above and in absence of additional funding, starting 1 February 2015 the Chess Federation of Kazakhstan temporarily suspends its activities related to organizing championships and cups of the Republic of Kazakhstan, training competitions, sending chess players to international competitions, giving out scholarships and paying wages," the Federation declared.

And this - after a truly successful 2014!

Kazakhstan women's chess team was outstanding at the 2014 World Chess Olympics in the Norwegian city of Tromso, winning the honorable 6th place out of 134 participating countries. The men’s team achieved a major success at the Asian Cup. In fast chess competitions they had sensationally got ahead of everyone, including the leaders of the world chess India and China. The team from Kazakhstan brought several golden medals back home.

Dinara Saduakasova became world champion in the Under 18 group and Bisara Asaubayeva won silver in the Under 10 age group in the same competition. We also had one bronze, four silvers and one gold at the Asian championship for kids.

Back in 2013 Kazakhstan hosted the Women’s Chess World competitions that brought together almost all of the strongest chess players from around the globe. It was also reported that Kazakhstan had serious chances of hosting the Chess Olympiad in 2018 (thought it appears that Georgia’s Batumi has got the bid).

Now, the lack of funds froze all the activities of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation. Is this a check or a checkmate?
