Tengrinews.kz - The police detained a family of phone scammers in Pavlodar, according to Polisia.kz.
The arrest was made by the regional cyber police in coordination with the Department for Combating Cybercrime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
"Five sim-box devices, each with 8 slots containing SIM cards from Kazakhstani mobile operators, were found in a rented apartment. These devices were used to create virtual subscriber numbers for committing internet frauds within the republic. Additionally, 4 routers and 53 SIM cards from Kazakhstani and foreign mobile operators were seized," said Zhandos Suyinbai, the head of the Department for Combating Cybercrime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
According to him, the detainees have been brought to the police. It was established that their task was to change the SIM cards in the serviced boxes every week. An investigation is underway.
"The Department for Combating Cybercrime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in collaboration with mobile operators, continues its active fight against scammers and their accomplices. Since the beginning of the year, more than 9,000 numbers have been blocked, from which over 200,000 calls were made. Employees of the departments for combating cybercrime have detained 28 internet scammers, 3 'operators' of sim-box stations, seized 7 sim-box devices, and 285 SIM cards from various mobile operators," the police statement reads.
Earlier, law enforcement agencies in the Karaganda region, including cyber police, the Department for Combating Cybercrime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the National Security Committee, conducted a joint operation against internet fraud. The operation was coordinated by the regional prosecutor’s office.
