Kazakhstan is preparing to increase the transit potential for transportation of NATO freights to Afghanistan, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev as saying at the Ministers Conference on Afghanistan in Almaty. The President stressed that Kazakhstan was actively participating in creation of the regional transport infrastructure. Construction of the Western Europe-Western China transit corridor would be completed in 2014 and Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railroad would be launched in May 2013, he said. "We are committed to our obligations on restoration of Afghanistan and rendering help and support to Afghan people. Since the beginning of the operations of the international peacekeeping forces in Afghanistan, Kazakhstan has been annually rendering support to the coalition troops for implementation of the cooperation agreement, as well as the agreement with NATO on freights transit and the bilateral agreements with the U.S., Germany, France, Spain and Great Britain. We are now preparing to expand the transit potential for NATO freights by means of Kazakhstan's Caspian port in Aktau," Nazarbayev said. The President added that Almaty, being a transport nexus close to Afghanistan, could assist in the country's economic development. Nazarbayev stressed that Kazakhstan insisted on its suggestion to establish the UN International Center in Almaty as a base for support to Afghan people. Nazarbayev noted that withdrawal of the international troops from Afghanistan should not be viewed as a decrease of the global community's attention to the country's problems. According to the President, this process should become a signal for transition to peaceful development of Afghanistan. By Dmitriy Khegai
