More than 5000 people took part in the 2nd Almaty Charitable Marathon, Tengrinews.kz reports, referring to the press-service of Almaty city Akimat (municipal authorities). Courage to be First Marathon was held on April 28. Akim of Almaty (Mayor) Akhmetzhan Yessimov, prominent athletes, culture, show-business and business persons, professional runners and amateurs participated in the Marathon. “Our marathon has become a traditional event. We’ve included it into the schedule of the city’s sports events and we are going to hold it every year. 2000 people run the Marathon last year and 5000 people took part in the event this year. Almaty citizens are taking to healthy lifestyle. Our city is a regional leader, so we should be in the lead in everything,” Akhmetzhan Yessimov said. The event was meant to promote the international movement to support Boston that suffered to consecutive explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Yessimov expressed condolences to the families of those, who were killed or injured in the bombings and said that sport was meant to promote peace and development of human abilities. The Marathon started at 08:00 a.m. from the Park of the First President (Al-Farabi Av. corner Navoi Str.) Participants aged 10 - 75 had a chance to run one of four routes: 2, 9.6, 21 and 42-kilometer long distances. Organizers of the event and the city authorities paid a lot of attention to ensuring security. About 500 policemen watched the routes of the Marathon. The starting point and finishing line were carefully checked before the event and surveillance cameras were installed along the whole distance of the marathon. Marathon finished at the Central Stadium, where Akim of Almaty awarded the winners with commemorative gifts and valuable prizes. A festive concert closed the day of the Marathon.
