Baktykozha Izmukhambetov, Akim (Governor) of Atyrau Oblast, called the farmers to focus on planting sunflower in the region, KazTAG reports. "Why don't we plant more sunflowers? We could bring sunflower seeds from abroad and plant them on our land. This way we could achieve a 50% increased in the yield of oil from seeds, and the remaining oil cake could be used for compound feeds production. Water subsidies are available for the project," Izmukhambetov said at the meeting on the region's agricultural development on August 24. He added that farmers should not forget land cannot sustain any crops for two years after sunflowers are planted on it. "That is why we have to find spare places. Think this over," the region's Governor said.
