Tengrinews.kz - Donald Trump has officially assumed office as President of the United States. During his election campaign, he often attracted attention with bold statements. However, among his messages, there are directions similar to those previously outlined by Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Is this a coincidence, or do the two leaders think and act in unison? A correspondent from Tengrinews.kz discussed this issue with political scientists.

Since 2022, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has been actively emphasizing the principle of "Law and Order" in his addresses to the people. This same principle became an important part of Donald Trump’s program, where it is referred to as "Law and Order."

A global trend

Political analyst Gaziz Abishev emphasized that the idea of law and order has been promoted in Kazakhstan for several years.

"President Tokayev highlights the importance of 'law and order' in his speeches to avoid a return to crime and regional bosses reminiscent of the 90s. Failure to follow the law in small matters leads to legal nihilism. Both Kazakhstan and Trump are promoting this idea, even though Trump expresses it in a grotesque form, talking about illegal immigrants, drug cartels, and criminal groups that need to be fought," added Gaziz Abishev.

At the same time, he noted that it is necessary to "bring back the idea of meritocracy," so that the state of affairs is determined by competence, not by ultraliberalism.

"And both Tokayev's long-standing theses and Trump's agenda align with the global trend towards the fashion of law and order. Examples of countries such as Switzerland, the Emirates, and Singapore show that it is possible to be effective, wealthy, and practically leave no one in poverty, providing the opportunity for everyone to make a living, as long as order is ensured," concluded the expert.

Mazhilis deputy Nikita Shatalov also shared his opinion regarding the idea of law and order.

Shatalov noted that the concept of "Law and Order" is applied in different countries depending on the situation, but the core of this principle remains the same: strengthening the rule of law, ensuring the inevitability of punishment for crimes, and strict adherence to social norms.

"I think such trends have a global storyline, related to changes in societies that occur against the backdrop of expanding freedom of speech on social media, actively defending rights, migration, and other crises. This is a practical and consistent response to the desire to destabilize societal foundations," added Shatalov.

Similarities and key differences

Political scientist and international relations expert Azamat Baigaliyev agrees that some of the messages from the two presidents are similar.

"Analyzing Donald Trump's recent speeches, it is hard not to notice that some of his theses align with the value-based concepts of Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. This is not surprising, as the political platform of our Head of State is based on the social demand of Kazakhstanis for large-scale socio-political reforms, strengthening the protection of national interests, ensuring legality and order at the local level, and guaranteeing fair rules in trade and economic relations," said Baigaliyev.

The political scientist also sees important differences. A significant difference is that Trump's new initiatives in the U.S. risk permanently polarizing both American society and the alliance of Western countries, he noted. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan's reforms are being implemented at a moderate pace, without escalating tensions, witch hunts, or a breakdown of the entire management system.

In addition to the principle of "Law and Order," Donald Trump often emphasizes that the success of a country depends on the work of its people, regardless of gender or race, which resonates with Tokayev's statements about the working person. Tokayev stresses the importance of fulfilling duties conscientiously and fostering public optimism, saying that only in this way will the country achieve progress. Trump, in turn, also places a bet on optimism among his supporters with his slogan "Make America Great Again."

Unity and cohesion

Trump concluded his inaugural speech with the promise to "unite and bring together" Americans, which was a logical continuation of one of the key themes of his election campaign, "Unify America." The importance of unity among Kazakhstanis is also a recurring theme in Tokayev's speeches.

"The most important task is to preserve statehood. Despite numerous challenges, we must unite, protect our unity, and work for the benefit of Kazakhstan," said the President of our country in February 2023.

As noted by Mazhilis deputy Nikita Shatalov, the idea of unity is fundamental for all nations. For Kazakhstan, as a multinational and multi-confessional society, unity is the core that holds public order together.
