Kazakhstan is negotiating membership in the European Broadcasting Union, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports citing Kazakhstan's KazMedia Ortalygy (KazMedia Center). A membership in the organization would enable Kazakhstan to participate in Eurovision that is one of the most prestigious international song contests. The company's press-service says that Kazakhstan has already tried negotiating the issue on numerous occasions, but failed to obtain the membership because of European Broadcasting Union's tough requirements. “First of all, a candidate country-member of the European Broadcasting Union should actively employ the Union’s services, secondly, it should regularly purchase expensive rights to broadcasting different major events and, thirdly, the country should have it own technically advanced facilities,” the press-service said. “Kazakhstan TV channels had no resources to meet these requirements until recently,” the press-release says. Besides, the press-service reported that Kazakhstan “is expecting a response from Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union on KazMedia Ortalygy's application to join the union.”
