Kazakhstan might recall its application to host the World Winter Universiade-2017 in Almaty, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports citing head of Kazakhstan Federation of Student Sport Kairat Zakiryanov. “Late last week I met with the head of social-economic development department Natalya Kotenko in Prime-Minister's office. She said that we have two options: hosting either the World Student Games or the Expo-2017 and the Govenrment tends towards the latter option,” Zakiryanov said. According to him, with the high probability of the second wave of the economic crisis, Kazakhstan government deems it very costly for the budget to host both these major events. Earlier Tengrinews.kz English reported that hosting the Universiade would require at least $950 million. "I don't understand where such huge amounts for preparation and hosting the Student Games are going to come from. I've calculated: direct expenses, except for construction of an international airport or several roads, would not exceed $100 million. This includes construction of university village for 3,000 people, which will cost $30 million, as well as a supermarket, hospital and some other facilities, which will cost the same amount,” Zakiryanov said.
