Kazakhstan will expand its ferry fleet, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Kazakhstan Minister of Transport and Communications Askar Zhumagaliyev. "There is currently a necessity of expanding the ferry fleet and increasing the volume of transported freights, as local shipping companies transport oil only and the whole load of dry and ferry freights is transported by foreign companies. "We expect the expansion of Aktau seaport to increase the dry cargo part at least by 2.5 million tons per year. The feasibility studies are currently being prepared for that. We need an expanded seaport that would handle all the freight transportation needs," Askar Zhumagaliyev said at the Majilis meeting. According to him, two ferries will be bought in the nearest time for transportation of dry cargoes. "We need to buy ships for transportation. We need ferries and bulk carriers. In line with the President's instruction, two ferries will be bought. They will cruise between Aktau, Baku and Makhachkala transporting dry cargoes," Askar Zhumagaliyev said. According to the Minister, Amendments to several legislative acts of Kazakhstan on transport issues update the existing legislation on shipment safety and create conditions for development of human potential. "We have a big deficit in sea transport personnel, especially at the managerial positions. Local professionals make only 28 percent. The sea academy opened in Almaty last year. It currently has 61 students. We have enrolled an new group of students Aktau. Meanwhile, we have to enter in into the law that such education has to be provided by certified education facilities only, as we have to be sure that our sea experts are trained well. The personnel will grow gradually and we will focus on that," the Minister added. By Baubek Konyrov
