Tengrinews.kz – Mazhilis deputy Zhanarbek Ashimzhanov proposed to restrict access to TikTok for minors in Kazakhstan.
In his parliamentary request to Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov, the Mazhilis member stated that the influence of social networks on the modern generation is becoming increasingly destructive.
"Today, children's ABC is a social network, a pacifier is TikTok, and a lullaby is Instagram. Their influence on humanity can be compared, without exaggeration, to an atomic bomb," the deputy noted.
Ashimzhanov recalled that last year, deputies Erlan Sairov and Nurtore Zhusip raised the issue of the negative impact of TikTok, but there was no reaction from the responsible authorities. The deputy emphasized that, despite the positive aspects of social networks, the lack of control leads to negative consequences.
"Without a doubt, we live in the information age, and social networks have become an integral part of our lives. They also have positive aspects. However, if we do not restrict access to social networks, then children and teenagers who have not yet seen life will become zombified. We have big problems. At the same time, TikTok is widely popular among children and teenagers," the Mazhilis member emphasized.
According to Zhanarbek Ashimzhanov, over the past two years, 14.1 million users have registered on TikTok in Kazakhstan, most of them are minors.
"TikTok is used to spread dirty information that encourages abuse, such as gambling advertising, streaming indecent acts, profanity, pornography, calls for suicide, spreading religious sermons, bullying, and advertising illegal substances. Children copy destructive behavior, which has a negative impact on their upbringing. For example, the meaningless ‘Cat Walk’ challenge, where participants must walk the streets like models on the catwalk, has gained more than 500 million views," the deputy noted.
The Mazhilisman noted that today, in fact, social networks are engaged in raising children, which is why the younger generation is increasingly moving away from national values. Because of this, many countries have begun to introduce a ban or restrictions on the use of TikTok. Ashimzhanov believes that Kazakhstan should follow their example and consider the possibility of restricting this social network.
"Excessive use of the platform has serious consequences for children. Ophthalmologists report that over the past five years in Kazakhstan, the number of eye diseases in children has increased sharply due to the constant use of smartphones," he said.
In this regard, Ashimzhanov proposed that the government restrict all content on TikTok that contradicts moral standards, national values and traditions, and also poses a threat to the mental and physical health of children. In addition, the deputy believes it is necessary to consider the possibility of completely banning the use of TikTok by minors or introducing strict restrictions.
