Tengrinews.kz - When will Kazakhstani music return to Instagram? Vice Minister of Culture and Information Yevgeniy Kochetov was asked about this.
As the official noted, the Ministry of Culture and Information has been "at the forefront of this problem" together with the Ministry of Justice from the very first days.
"From the very first days, we have received requests from artists who were not receiving a certain amount of income. (...) We are monitoring, we know what is happening, we communicate with artists. As far as this is possible from the point of view of our interaction with online platforms - with Meta, we, of course, help build a dialogue. But first of all, this is the interaction of two economic entities. This is how our legislation is structured at the moment, where authors are represented by the author community, on the other hand, there is an online platform in the person of Meta, which puts forward its demands," Kochetov said at a briefing in the government.
The Ministry of Culture, according to him, plays a "maximum intermediary role", but works to ensure that such things do not happen again.
The vice minister did not answer how much money Kazakhstani artists lost during the time that their music was not broadcast on Instagram.
"Unfortunately, I cannot say how much money our artists lost, because this system of payments and rewards is not clear enough for us in terms of how it was before, what was paid. It is not that it is impossible to calculate, it is a question of interaction between two economic entities. There are artists, there is a community of authors, they interact with each other," Kochetov said.
Journalists clarified: is there a time frame for when Kazakhstani music will return to Instagram?
"We ourselves are waiting very much. I myself am sitting and constantly refreshing the pages on those posts on Instagram that were taken down because the music was blocked. We hope that in the near future (it will return - ed.)," the vice minister replied.
Last December, Kazakhs noticed that most of the songs by local artists had disappeared from Instagram, and their tracks could no longer be added to publications. The incident drew attention to the problem of copyright in the country. As Vice Minister of Justice Botagoz Zhakselekova explained, the reason is the lack of agreements between Meta and one of Kazakhstan's collective rights management organizations (CRMO).
