Child loses part of liver after playground swing injury in Kazakhstan

Tengrinews.kz - A 3-year-old child lost part of his liver as a result of an injury sustained on a swing in Pavlodar region.

Incident occurred the playground in Aksu. According to medical reports, the child sustained an abdominal injury, which initially showed no visible signs of damage. However, a week later, the child's condition worsened, prompting the parents to seek medical attention at the Aksu hospital. An ultrasound revealed a large amount of blood in the abdominal cavity.

"The child suffered a blunt abdominal trauma, internal organ bruises, a complete rupture of the right lobe of the liver, and internal bleeding. Additionally, the boy experienced pulmonary edema and second-degree hemorrhagic shock. An emergency team of Pavlodar doctors, including a resuscitator and surgeons, was urgently dispatched by air ambulance," reported the Pavlodar Regional Children's Hospital.

The child was urgently operated on in Aksu and then transferred to the intensive care unit of Pavlodar Regional Children's Hospital.

"Following the severe trauma, including a liver rupture and massive blood loss, the child developed brain swelling the next day. In the subsequent days, our intensive care specialists managed to control the brain swelling and acute liver failure," the hospital reported.

The surgical team worked to address various postoperative complications and monitored the liver’s regeneration. Overall, the child spent nearly 40 days in the hospital, including a week in intensive care.

As it became known, the boy is being prepared for discharge on 15 August.
