Tengrinews.kz - The ruling "traffic light coalition" of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and Alliance 90/The Greens has collapsed in Germany. Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he would put the question of confidence in his government to a vote in the Bundestag on January 15, 2025, according to DW.

If the government does not receive confidence, this would open the way for early elections, which could take place in March 2025.

Scholz stressed that he and Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck fully agree that Germany needs prompt clarity on its future political course. In the coming weeks, before Christmas, Scholz intends to submit a number of important bills to parliament for discussion, including measures to urgently support industry and stabilize the pension system.

Amid political instability, Scholz also announced the dismissal of Finance Minister Christian Lindner, who is the chairman of the FDP. Lindner, in turn, accused the chancellor of the collapse of the ruling coalition and said that the Free Democrats are ready to take responsibility for the future of Germany if a new government is formed after the elections.

It should be noted that early elections to the Bundestag of the Federal Republic of Germany occur very rarely and are possible only in special political situations when confidence in the government has been shaken. They can only be held with the approval of a number of constitutional bodies, including the federal president, but not at the initiative of deputies or the chancellor.

The constitution provides for two cases for the dissolution of parliament: if a candidate for the post of chancellor does not receive an absolute majority of votes or if the government loses a vote of confidence, and the president, at the request of the chancellor, dissolves the Bundestag within 21 days.

On November 6, the results of the elections in America became known.
