Medical students of Aktobe city in western Kazakhstan now have a pregnant robot to practice birth attendance, Tengrinews reports citing STV Channel. This unusual training device costs 16 million tenge ($103 thousand). A special training room was set up in the West Kazakhstan State Medical University for future gynecologists and maieutologists to practice. It is used to teach students to handle a newborn baby, use baby weight scales, infant incubators and help deliver a baby. The pregnant man-sized robot is capable of a fidelity simulation of a real pregnant woman. "We can set up different scenarios ranging from common physiological labor to various birth complications including those requiring a surgical intervention, such as a C-section or various hemorrhages. It allows us to recreate basically any situation that the doctors can face during their practice. (...) The cardiac rhythm, temperature, blood pressure, and even results of blood and urinary tests are displayed at the screen," the head of the Clinical Training Center at the West Kazakhstan State Medical University Kairat Kurmangaliyev said. The pregnant robot can even actually deliver a baby. Its baby's name is Noel. It can simulate a real infant and can even change its skin color if it lacks oxygen. "Baby birth process can be complicated and is not always successful. And now we can simulate almost all the possible complications that might occur in real life with Noel's help. This will help future maieutologists learn to act correctly and avoid fatal mistakes," teacher Moldir Ispolova said.
