Commenting the clashes in Zhanaozen in his exclusive interview for Tengrinews.kz Yermukhamet Yertysbayev, Political Advisor to the President of Kazakhstan, reminded Paul Murphy, Member of the European Parliament, of the Britain’s recent history. “Paul Murphy should remember that very similar events happened more than 20 years ago in Britain. There were very many English mines there; the coal industry was well developed. And in just the same manner they (the miners) were demanding an increase in wages, an almost two-fold increase in wages,” Yertysbayev said. It was then, that the ex-Prime Minister of Britain Margaret Thatcher became known as “The Iron Lady”. “She flatly refused to deal this their demands and during one and a half or two years there were very massive clashes between the miners and British armed forces. In the end the government closed down all those mines choosing to buy coal from Russia, Poland or anywhere else,” President’s political advisor reminded the British history. But those rigorous steps to close down the mines were the very thing that then helped England modernize its enterprises, run a privatization and cut expenses. “A whole government program was unfolded to help these people get new professions,” he continued. “In the other words, Mr. Murphy knows all than very well. Being a knowledgeable person he should once again remember the history,” Yermukhamet Yertysbayev concluded.
