Tengrinews.kz — A nine-month-old child from Kazakhstan nearly died in Vietnam after swallowing a safety pin. Doctors managed to remove the dangerous object in time through emergency endoscopy.

According to the press service of Vietnam’s Ministry of Health, on July 4, a nine-month-old citizen of Kazakhstan was admitted to Hue Central Hospital. Before that, the child had been at a hospital in Da Nang, from where he was urgently transferred.

During the examination, doctors found that the sharp object could damage the mucous membrane, cause esophageal perforation, bleeding, mediastinitis and pose a direct threat to the child’s life if it was not removed as soon as possible. Specialists held an emergency consultation and decided to perform an urgent endoscopy.

Doctors were able to safely remove the sharp safety pin without causing further damage to the esophageal mucosa or any complications.

“A broken safety pin is one of the most difficult foreign objects to remove during gastrointestinal endoscopy in young children. Its sharp tip can easily shift, causing deep tissue damage during the procedure,” doctors explained.

After several days of observation, the child’s condition stabilized. By the morning of July 6, doctors had not detected any complications.
