Wholesale stores have been on fire near the railway station in Shymkent in Southern Kazakhstan, Tengrinews reports. According to witnesses, the fire started at food and tires stores at around 2:00 p.m. on February 26 and was spread very fast. There was no security personnel around when the fire started and the renters of the store had to call the firefighters on their own. Firefighters were quenching the fire from two sides to speed up the operation. Over 20 firefighting teams were fighting it from one side and a firefighting train was attacking the fire from the other side. But the fire was so massive - it covered 1100 sq. m. - that it took them three hours to win the battle. The fire was extinguished only at 4:51 p.m. Nearby railway lines were cut off from power to prevent any linked accidents until the fire was fully quenched. Investigators are now working to figure out the cause of the accident.
