A construction crane toppled late Wednesday in a Swiss town, injuring several people, two of them critically, AFP reports according  to police and media reports.

Rescue workers were scrambled to the scene of the accident in Saint Sulpice, which lies on the outskirts of the city of Lausanne.

Police did not immediately give details of the number of people hurt, nor the seriousness of their injuries. Nor did they say why the crane crashed down.

Local newspaper 24 Heures reported on its website that two construction workers had been trapped in the rubble.

After rescue workers managed to free them, they were flown to hospital by helicopter in a life-threatening condition, the newspaper said.

The two men were dealing with a technical problem in the crane's cabin, 40 metres (130 feet) above the construction site of a school, when it crashed to the ground.
