Tengrinews.kz - The operation to separate one-year-old conjoined twins Minal and Mirha from Pakistan was successfully completed in Turkey, according to Sky News.

The 14-hour surgery was led by a leading British surgeon Noor ul Owase Jeelani, who was specifically chosen for his extensive experience in separating conjoined twins. In 2022, he successfully separated three-year-old boys in Brazil, in 2021, he operated on one-year-old girls in Israel, and in 2019, he separated two-year-old girls from Pakistan.

It is noted that the complete separation of the girls required two surgical stages over three months, as the twins shared vital blood vessels and brain tissue.

In preparation for the complex surgery, specialists created a high-definition 3D model of the twins to help doctors in Ankara understand what to expect in the operating room. This also allowed the British team to prepare and rehearse the upcoming surgical procedures.

During the operations, the surgeons used mixed reality technology, which combined 3D images with the physical world, enhancing precision during the surgery.

"This technology makes many of our routine surgeries safer, less invasive, and more efficient. The opportunity to give these girls and their families a new future, where they can live independently and enjoy their childhood, is a special privilege," said Dr. Jeelani.

According to Gemini, one pair of conjoined twins is born for every 60,000 births, and only 5 percent of them are craniopagus twins, meaning they are fused at the head.

The life expectancy for children who are not separated is very low. About 40 percent of craniopagus twins are stillborn or die during childbirth.

There was also a case where an Aktobe resident filed a claim for material and moral damages after she suffered a tear in her eyelid after a home blepharoplasty procedure.
