Unrest in North Africa should be a lesson for Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Nursultan Nazarbayev as saying at the Senate (upper chamber of the Parliament) meeting on April 15. “Everything that is happening in North Africa and in the world around us should be a lesson for us,” said Kazakhstan President in the Senate Hall. "Creation of favorable conditions for the people should be our top priority,” Nazarbayev said continuing that it is especially important to maintain interethnic accord. “May 1 is the day of unity of the people of Kazakhstan” it is important that people feel united as a nation, he said. There are over 100 nationalities that peacefully cohabit in Kazakhstan. This makes the issues of interethnic and interreligious accord especially important for Kazakhstan. President said that Kazakhstan will fulfill all its social obligations to its citizens to prevent North-Africa-like events from spilling into Kazakhstan. Social and economic well-being of the population is important to keep the country from becoming prone to armed conflicts. He pointed out that industrialization and social modernization have already been set to the top of Kazakhstan’s agenda. “Much has been planned, the needed funds have been allocated. We, and especially deputies, should maintain a close control [of the implementation],” Nazarbayev said. He also pointed out the goals and tasks set in his State of the Nation Address: “We need 7 percent growth. 4 percent is generated by raw materials; production should be responsible for the rest. We should not depend on raw materials. We have plenty of oil and gas, but we need to be active. We should be prepared,” said Nursultan Nazarbayev.
