Fir trees fallen by the storm in Almaty will be processed into fodder flour, Tengrinews.kz reports citing chairman of Kazakhstan forestry and hunting commission Yerlan Nyssanbayev. Domestic animals are often fed with coniferous flour rich in minerals and vitamins. Besides, fir-needles can be used as aromatizers in pharmaceutical goods. “Five line sawmills have been installed in Medeu for processing timber,” Yerlan Nyssanbayev said. “1,300 cubic meters of timber has already been processed. 132 cubic meters has been sold to private companies at the cost of 25,000 tenge ($171) per cubic meter.” He also added that average price of a cubic meter of uncut timber varies from 22,000 to 48,000 tenge ($150 to $329). Nyssanbayev said that there are not enough people and equipment for elimination of the consequences of the storm in Almaty, causing thousands of trees to fall in the Lesser Almaty Gorge and the Ile-Alatau National Park. “We need to install three more sawmills and hire additional 100 people. Currently 350 people are working in the area,” he added. “The first stage of our plan is to clean up the trees on the slopes that are in the line of sight of the tourists from Medeu dam.” According to Kazakhstan forestry and hunting commission, 400 million tenge ($2.7 million) are required for elimination of the storm consequences. Nyssanbayev said that it may take up to 1.5 months to obtain the funding. Earlier Tengrinews.kz English reported that full restoration of the forests will take up to 150 years, as fir trees grow slowly. 480 hectares of forests were damaged in the Lesser Almaty Gorge by a storm on May 17.
