Many of the traffic lights will be replaced by new ones in Kazakhstan. The lights will be changing sequentially, i.e. after an interim time interval, the way it is done in Western countries, Tengrinews.kz reports citing deputy chairman of the Road Police Commission of Kazakhstan Interior Ministry. This way the green light will illuminate for the pedestrians only after the red light illuminates for the cars and they fully stop moving. Right now the lights change simultaneously. The plan is to install 10 new traffic lights and reconstruct 19 old ones in Almaty in 2013. Countdown timers will be installed on 58 traffic lights. According to Maitybayev, the countdown timers have already been installed on 85 traffic lights in Almaty. 13 new traffic lights were installed and 20 were reconstructed in Almaty last year. The Ministry also states that there are currently 20 multi-level road junctions and 68 split-level pedestrian crossings in Almaty. They improve the capacity of the roads and decrease the number of "car-pedestrian" conflict points. According to Maitybayev, almost every second car accident - around 44 percent - in the country in 2012 was related to pedestrians. By Linda Buran
