Eleven dead in Jakarta floods: disaster agency

Eleven people have died in flood-related incidents in Jakarta, and more than 18,000 people were forced to leave their homes, AFP reports citing Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency. "Floods are occurring still and since January 15 11 people have died, five of whom from electrocution," said agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. The victims included two children aged two and 13 years old. Eight percent of the city was still inundated but "the situation remains under control" despite the state of emergency in place, said Nugroho. Traffic disruptions continued to hamper activities in the main business districts and many houses suffered power outages as the utility firm switched off more than 1,000 sub stations for safety precautions.
