South Korea President Lee Myung-bak to visit Kazakhstan

South Korea President Lee Myung-bak is expected to come to Kazakhstan September 12-14 on an official visit, Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Altai Abibullayev said September 3. “During the visit (…) the sides are expected to discuss the current state and prospects of the bilateral cooperation in power industry, processing industries, agriculture, education, and tourism”, he said. He also added that the two presidents are to officially start construction of the Balkhash thermal power plant to be jointly constructed on the south-west shore of the Balkhash Lake close to Ekibastuz coal mine. Tengrinews.kz reported earlier that the first two power generating units of the thermal power plant are to be commissioned in 2013, with the other two units being placed into operation in 2016. The design capacity of the power plant is 2 640 megawatt. According to Mr. Abibullayev, the trade turnover between Kazakhstan and South Korea as of the end of 2011 totaled almost $1 billion.
