Kazakhstan may contribute to destruction of chemical weapons in Syria, RIA Novosti reports, citing Mr. Anuar Tanalinov, Director of the Foreign Ministry’s Department for Multilateral Cooperation, as saying at a round-table discussion in the Kazakhstan’s Embassy. “We are considering contributing to the effort to destroy the weapons (…) Kazakhstan supports the initiative. We believe the Middle East should be a zone free of weapons of mass destruction”, he said. Mr. Anuar Tanalinov emphasized that Kazakhstan welcomes Damascus joining the Convention banning chemical weapons and hopes the chemical weapons will be liquidated within reasonably shortest time. Earlier Russia was reported to take an active part in the operation to destroy chemical weapons in Syria. September 28 UN Security Council adopted a resolution obliging Syria to keep with the plan to liquidate chemical weapons.
