New NATO commander for Europe takes over

US Admiral Mark Ferguson took up his new post as commander of NATO forces in Europe, taking over from another American, Admiral Bruce Clingan, AFP reports.


US Admiral Mark Ferguson took up his new post as commander of NATO forces in Europe, taking over from another American, Admiral Bruce Clingan, AFP reports.

The 57-year-old, who was Vice Chief of Naval Operations in Washington, will be based at Lago Patria near Naples, where the Allied Joint Force Command has been based since December 2012.

He said, "I am committed to strengthening the alliance and working with our allies and partners to ensure we remain a positive force for stability and peace throughout the region."

Clingan is retiring after 37 years in the US Navy.
