The overall carrying capacity of Kazakhstan’s export oil pipelines is to be augmented 1.5 times up to 100 million tons by 2020, KazTag Agency reports, citing KazMunaiGas National Oil and Gas Company’s chairman of the Board Mr. Lyazzat Kiilov as saying in a recent interview for Kazakhstan’s Liter newspaper. “The current demand for export oil pipelines is almost met. However, the plans to boost oil production will call for both expansion of the already operating pipelines and construction of new ones. The current carrying capacities of all the Kazakhstan’s export oil pipelines stand at 66 million tons a year; the figure is to be brought up to 100 million tons a year by 2020”, he elaborated. According to him, works are under way to expand the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) network of pipelines. Launched back in 2001, it has shipped 276.2 million tons, including 232.7 million tons of Kazakhstan oil. In 2011 the oil pumped through the network totaled 31.8 million tons, including 28.2 million tons of Kazakhstan’s oil. When the expansion project is over in 2015, the pipeline network will be able to transport 67 million tons a year, including up to 52.5 million tons of Kazakhstan’s oil. Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) is a major international crude oil transportation project with the participation of Russia, Kazakhstan and leading international oil and gas companies, created for construction and operation of a trunk pipeline more than1.5 thousand kilometers long. The primary source of crude oil is from prolific fields in Western Kazakhstan with additional crude oil from Russian producers. This crude oil is transported through the CPC pipeline to the Company’s Marine Terminal in Yuzhnaya Ozereevka (Novorossiysk) where the crude oil is loaded on ocean going tankers for further delivery to the world markets. “Expansion of the carrying capacity of the Tengiz – Novorossiysk pipeline is a pressing issue given the growing oil production output at Tengiz and Karachaganak oilfield and with Kashagan coming on stream later on”, KMG Chairman of the Board believes. At the present stage Kazakhstan is negotiating with China to expand the Kazakhstan – China oil pipeline, [China's first transnational crude oil pipeline], up to 20 million tons a year. “Last year (…) the pipeline carrying capacity was raised to 12 million tons. The oil shipped in 2011 totaled 10.9 million tons”, Mr. Kiinov said. According to china.org.cn, the 1,200-km-long pipeline, starting in the city of Atasu in Kazakhstan and ending at Petrochina Dushanzi Petrochemical Company after entering China at Alataw Pass in Xinjiang, went into formal operation in July 2006. Besides, Kazakhstan plans to launch the Caspian tanker system, with the timeframe, stages and capacities depending on the 2nd and 2rd stages of Kashagan oilfield development. According to Kazakhstanlive.com, this project will connect Kazakhstan’s western regions with the new Caspian port that will provide shipment of oil to Turkey via Azerbaijan (and the 1770-km BTC pipeline).
